Project overview
As part of the M3 Junction 9 improvements near Winchester, Carney Construction delivered a major excavation package to enable the installation of new precast culverts. Approximately 4,000m³ of predominantly chalk material was removed within a sheet-piled excavation, requiring careful sequencing, access planning and control of the working area.
Key info
- Approx. 4,000m³ of chalk excavated
- Precast culvert installation completed
- Sheet-piled excavation
- Multi-year infrastructure programme
- Live M3 highway environment
The culvert installation phase has now been completed, supporting the wider multi-year programme of highway and infrastructure improvements at Junction 9.
Delivery
Excavation works
The works involved the excavation and removal of approximately 4,000m³ of chalk material to create the required formation for the precast culvert installation.
Operations were carried out within a constrained sheet-piled excavation, with plant movements, access and material removal carefully coordinated to maintain safe and efficient progress.

Culvert installation
Following excavation to the required depth and profile, the team supported the installation of the precast culvert units.

Safety and logistics
The depth and confined nature of the excavation required close control of plant operations, workforce access and interface management.
The team maintained programme momentum while working within an active highway environment, where safety, quality and coordination with the wider project team remained central throughout the works.

Productivity and programme
The chalk excavation phase represents a significant milestone within Carney Construction’s longer-term role on the scheme.
By completing the excavation and culvert installation works in sequence, the team enabled the next stages of the wider programme to progress.

Conclusion and summary
The M3 Junction 9 works demonstrate Carney Construction’s capability in delivering complex excavation and enabling works within a live infrastructure environment.
The successful removal of approximately 4,000m³ of chalk and completion of the precast culvert installation required controlled sequencing, reliable plant operations and close collaboration across the project team.
