Project overview
The West Midlands Viaduct programme involved 20 months of complex structural delivery, including 381 concrete pours, 3,443 tonnes of reinforcement and 22,179m³ of concrete. Strong planning and collaboration helped the team complete the final Pier Head and remaining wall ahead of programme.
Key info
- Programme duration: 20 months
- Ahead of Schedule: Completed 5 months early
- 22,179m³ of concrete poured
- 3,443 tonnes of reinforcement installed
- 381 individual concrete pours
Delivery
Programme and coordination
The scale of the works required multiple reinforced concrete activities to be planned and delivered across several active work fronts. Pour sequencing, reinforcement installation, formwork operations, access and concrete logistics all had to be closely coordinated to maintain progress across the viaduct.
Through consistent programme management and collaboration with the wider delivery team, Carney was able to sustain production while responding to changing site priorities and complex interfaces team.

Technical delivery
The programme included the construction of a wide range of structural elements, from large abutments and pier foundations through to shafts, pier heads and bearing plinths. The largest single abutment structure on the wider project was also delivered as part of the works.
In total, approximately 2,957 concrete wagon loads were managed across 381 pours, requiring detailed control of logistics, quality, sequencing and workforce resources.

Productivity and programme
Over the 20-month programme, the team delivered:
- 3,443 tonnes of reinforcement installed
- 22,179m³ of concrete poured
- 381 individual concrete pours
- 3 abutments
- 55 pier pile caps
- 55 pier kickers
- 53 pier false lifts
- 34 pier shafts
- 54 pier heads
- 124 bearing plinths

The final Pier Head and remaining wall were completed almost five months ahead of schedule, reflecting the strength of the planning, coordination and technical delivery throughout the programme.

Conclusion and summary
The West Midlands Viaduct demonstrates Carney Construction’s ability to deliver large-scale reinforced concrete works across a complex infrastructure programme. The project combined high-volume production with detailed sequencing, multiple structural interfaces and demanding programme requirements.
The successful completion of the works ahead of schedule was supported by a focused site team, strong collaboration and consistent control of safety, quality and productivity.
